Electric Bikes for Hills
Electric bikes for hills need high torque and low gears, not just a big watt number. Our Trailblazer eMTB pairs a 100Nm mid-drive motor with a Shimano Deore 10-speed and a 720Wh battery. It is built for steep trail climbs, with full suspension and 4-piston hydraulic brakes for the ride back down.
What Makes an eBike Good on Hills
Top speed and watts get the headlines, but hills test torque, gearing and battery size. Here is what to check, with the Trailblazer's numbers.
| Spec | Why it matters | Trailblazer |
|---|---|---|
| Torque | Pulls you up steep pitches | 100Nm |
| Motor position | Works through your gears | Mid-drive |
| Motor power | Peak is for short bursts | 500W rated, 750W peak |
| Gearing | Easier gear for steep sections | Shimano 10-speed, 11-36T |
| Pedal sensor | Assist follows pedal force | Torque sensor |
| Battery | Climbing uses more charge | 720Wh, UL 2271 |
| Brakes | Control on the descent | 4-piston hydraulic, 203mm front |
Mid-Drive vs. Hub Motor for Hills
A mid-drive motor drives the chain, so it climbs through the same gears you do. Shift into an easier gear before a steep section and the motor stays in a useful cadence.
A hub motor turns the wheel directly at one fixed ratio. It suits short paved hills and throttle starts, but shifting gears does not give the motor more leverage on a long, steep grade.
Battery Range on Climbs
Climbing, higher assist levels and extra rider or cargo weight all shorten range.
Below are our recorded Trailblazer tests on one 720Wh charge. They are examples, not guarantees, and long, steep climbs can fall below even the BOOST result.
| Recorded range | Recorded range |
| ECO | 102.36 miles |
| TRAIL | 82.25 miles |
| BOOST | 59.83 miles |
Trail Climbs or City Hills
The Trailblazer is a 55 lb full-suspension trail bike with no throttle. For paved city hills, our 750W fat tire bikes offer a half-twist throttle and an 85Nm hub motor.
| Your hills | Start with |
| Steep dirt or gravel climbs | Trailblazer eMTB |
| Roots, rocks and loose ground | Trailblazer, full suspension |
| Short paved city hills | 750W fat tire bikes |
| Hill starts with a throttle | 750W fat tire bikes |
Electric Bikes for Hills FAQs
Yes, pedal assist adds motor torque to your own effort, so climbs take less effort than on a regular bike. How well a bike climbs comes down to torque, gearing and battery size.
There is no single limit; torque, gearing, tire grip, total weight and assist level all play a part. The Trailblazer brings a 100Nm motor, an 11-36T cassette and 2.6-inch Maxxis Rekon tires.
Only if the bike has a throttle. The Trailblazer assists only while you pedal; our 750W fat tire bikes have a half-twist throttle.
Motor force runs through the chain and cassette, so ease off the pedals while you shift to reduce strain. The Trailblazer also costs more than any other bike in our lineup.
